I run an agricultural netting factory in Qingpu, on the western edge of Shanghai. My father started it in 1996, and I have spent most of my working life exporting bird netting, hail netting and shade cloth to growers in Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Europe, North America and South Africa.

That makes this an unusual “Top 10” list. My own company is on it, and I have put it first, because I know it better than any of the others and can tell you exactly where it fits and where it does not. The other nine are real Chinese suppliers with published company details. I have not ranked them against each other, and I have applied the same evaluation questions to us that I suggest you apply to them.

A list on its own will not get you a good net. Alibaba will show you several thousand companies selling “bird netting” in under a second. What buyers actually need is a way to tell which of those companies knit agricultural netting on their own machines, which ones resell someone else’s, and which specification will stop the birds in their particular orchard. That is what the first half of this guide is for. The names come after.

Decide the Specification Before You Compare Suppliers

Two decisions come before any supplier conversation: which bird you are excluding, and how the net will be installed. Everything else, including mesh size, yarn weight, width and edge finish, follows from those two.

The single most common specification error I see is a vineyard buyer ordering 15 mm mesh for Silvereye country. Silvereyes in Marlborough push through 15 mm. They need 8 mm or smaller, and that one number decides whether the net works at all.

Five Questions to Ask Every Supplier on This List

These five questions separate agricultural netting factories from generic net sellers. Ask them of us too.

1. Do you knit the netting yourselves, and can I see the machine running?

A trading company adds 20 to 40 percent to the factory price and cannot control batch-to-batch consistency, which is why the most common complaint I hear from buyers switching suppliers is “the first shipment was fine, the second one was different.” Ask for the business licence showing a manufacturing scope, a third-party factory audit if one exists, and a short video of a warp-knitting machine running bird netting mesh. A factory can send that in an afternoon. A trader cannot.

2. Knotted or knitted?

Knotted nylon nets are cheap and made by thousands of factories. They snag on canes and spurs, entangle birds, which is a compliance problem in Australia, New Zealand and the EU, and degrade under UV within two seasons. Professional agricultural bird netting is knitted, or knotless, HDPE. If a company’s core product is knotted net, it is in the general netting business, not the orchard business.

3. What mesh sizes can you actually produce, and can you go to 8 mm?

Knitting an 8 mm mesh with enough tensile strength to survive wind load is technically difficult. The yarn has to be fine enough for the aperture and strong enough for the field. Many factories are comfortable at 15 to 25 mm and cannot go below 12 mm. If your market has Silvereyes or Waxeyes, this one question removes most of the list.

4. What is the UV stabiliser content, and what lifespan will you put in writing?

Ask for an SGS or Intertek report showing the HALS content. Bird netting is light, typically 12 to 18 GSM, so it degrades faster than shade cloth or hail net. An honest lifespan for 15 GSM knitted HDPE with proper stabilisation is five to eight seasons with sensible handling. A factory quoting ten years or more at that weight is either overstating the UV package or understating the GSM.

5. Where have you exported bird netting before, and what documents come with it?

Australia and New Zealand expect wildlife-safe netting that does not entangle native species; the EU has similar directives. A factory that exports to your market should have references and compliance paperwork ready. No history in your market is not a disqualifier, but it means the verification work lands on you. Ask also for edge reinforcement and repair patches; a supplier that offers those understands the net in the field, not just on the loom.

Red Flags: Walk Away If Any of These Apply

• Sells knotted nylon “bird netting” as an agricultural product.
• Cannot knit at 15 mm or smaller with a stated tensile specification.
• No third-party UV test certificate, only a brochure claim.
• Cannot show a production video of a knitting machine running bird netting.
• Quotes below about US$0.30 per square metre. At that price it is not a professional-grade agricultural net.
• Says bird netting and insect netting are “the same product in different sizes.” They are made on different machines with different yarn.
• Cannot explain the difference between a drape net and a canopy net.
• Insists on 100 percent payment before production starts. Normal terms are 30 percent deposit and 70 percent before shipment, or a letter of credit.

Company details below are as published by each supplier. My company is listed first and described in the most detail because it is the one I can vouch for. The other nine are not ranked against each other. Confirm current capacity, mesh range and certificates directly with each company, using the five questions above.

EyouAgro is the agricultural netting brand of Joyeyou Industry, the family factory my father founded in Qingpu, Shanghai in 1996. Thirty years later we run eight production lines, hold 21 patents on netting structures and fixing hardware, and export to growers and distributors in twelve countries across Australia, New Zealand, the Americas, Europe and South Africa. Bird netting is one of our core lines alongside hail netting, insect netting and shade cloth, and for vineyards we make the full set: side net, drape net and overhead canopy net, with the clips and wire hardware to install them.

Every net is knitted on our own warp-knitting machines from 100 percent virgin HDPE, never recycled resin, with the HALS UV loading set per order and per market. We knit down to 8 mm mesh for Silvereye and Waxeye exclusion, which is the hardest specification in this product and the one most factories cannot meet. Each order ships with a batch UV test report, a material specification sheet, a pre-production sample from the same run, and installation guidance, and we accept 30 percent deposit with 70 percent before shipment or a letter of credit. Production takes 30 to 40 days in a normal season.

We sell to distributors and commercial growers by the container, and we would rather lose an enquiry than overpromise on it. We do not run a retail shop, we do not sell garden-centre packs, and we do not make knotted nylon net.

✅ Best for: Vineyard and orchard operations that need a specification-precise knitted net, especially fine mesh for small-bird markets in New Zealand, Australia and Chile, at 20,000 square metres and up per specification, who can plan around a 30 to 40 day production run.
⚠️ Not ideal for: Orders under 20,000 square metres, buyers who need delivery within a month, first-time importers without a forwarder, or anyone for whom price per square metre is the only criterion. On generic net a Hebei producer will beat us on price.

Huayang Lift Technology

It describes its agricultural nets as knitted from virgin HDPE, which is the right starting point; with a team of fifteen, the questions to ask are about monthly capacity and who runs quality control on a container-scale order.

✅ Best for: Buyers near the northern ports who want a small, direct producer for standard mesh sizes and modest volumes.
⚠️ Not ideal for: Large seasonal programmes or fine-mesh work, where a fifteen-person operation will be capacity-limited.

Dongshen Development Ltd.

• Location: Fujian (ships from Xiamen port)
• Company type: Manufacturer with export licence

Dongshen is a Fujian netting factory whose export markets overlap almost exactly with ours: Australia, New Zealand, North America and northern Europe. It publishes its machine list and certificates, quotes 30 to 40 days for production, and sets OEM minimums by weight, typically two to three tonnes per specification. It makes both knitted and knotted PE nets and also a large volume of construction safety mesh, so on a bird netting enquiry ask specifically for the knitted agricultural range and its UV report.

✅ Best for: Importers in Australia, New Zealand and Europe who want a certified factory with an established export routine and both hail and bird netting on one order.
⚠️ Not ideal for: Buyers who need fine mesh below 12 mm or complete vineyard systems with hardware, unless Dongshen confirms both in writing.

Shijiazhuang Gezi Screen

⚠️ Not ideal for: Commercial orchards that need an agricultural knitted net with a UV certificate and field references, since that is not the company’s core business.

Fujian Yangfan Plastic Netting

✅ Best for: Buyers who want a dedicated bird netting manufacturer with export experience and the capacity for seasonal container programmes.
⚠️ Not ideal for: Buyers who need complete vineyard systems with hardware, or who want to rule out knotted product entirely without checking the specification line by line.

Zhengzhou Unity

What We Don’t Do

Every Chinese supplier’s website says it can make anything. Here is what we will not do, so you can rule us out quickly if it does not fit.

• Knotted nylon bird netting. It entangles birds, and we do not want our name on it.
• Orders below 20,000 square metres per specification. Standard programmes run at 50,000 square metres and up. Below 20,000, a container is not economical for you and a machine setup is not economical for us; a local distributor will serve you better.
• Recycled resin, even if you ask for it. We cannot control where recycled material came from, so we cannot warrant its life.
• A ten-year promise at 15 GSM. Five to eight seasons is the honest number.
• Delivery dates we cannot meet. In the quiet season we ship in 25 days; in peak season it can be 45. We tell you which before you pay the deposit.

When Buying Direct from China Makes Sense

What mesh size do I need for my bird species?

Size the mesh for the smallest bird you need to exclude. Silvereyes and Waxeyes under 10 g need 8 mm or smaller. Starlings and Mynas at 60 to 80 g are stopped by 15 to 20 mm. Crows and Magpies need only 25 to 35 mm. A net that stops Starlings will not stop Silvereyes.

What is the difference between knotted and knitted bird netting?

Knotted netting has a knot at every intersection, which snags on vegetation and can trap birds. Knitted, or knotless, netting is made on a warp-knitting machine from interlocking loops, lies flat over the canopy and is far less likely to entangle birds. Knitted HDPE is the standard for commercial vineyards and orchards.

How long does Chinese bird netting last outdoors?

Knitted HDPE bird netting at 15 to 18 GSM with a proper HALS UV stabiliser typically lasts 5 to 8 seasons. Lifespan depends on UV intensity at your latitude and altitude, whether the net is stored between seasons, and installation care. A factory promising 10 years or more at 15 GSM is overpromising.

What is the minimum order for bird netting from a Chinese factory?

Expect a minimum of about 20,000 square metres per specification from an export-oriented factory, with standard programmes running at 50,000 square metres and up. Custom mesh, especially below 10 mm, needs its own machine setup, so factories rarely go lower for it. Below 20,000 square metres a local distributor is normally more practical.

How do I tell a real bird netting factory from a trading company?

Ask for a business licence that lists manufacturing, a production video of a knitting machine running bird netting mesh, and a third-party factory audit report.
