01 · Why Shade Matters

What Full Sun Does to a Coffee Seedling

Coffee evolved as an understorey plant. In the nursery stage the seedling has a shallow root system and thin cuticle — it cannot regulate what a mature tree handles easily.

The damage starts at the leaf surface

In open sun, leaf-surface temperature routinely exceeds 35°C. Above that the stomata close, photosynthesis stalls, and the seedling loses water faster than roots can replace it.

Under 75–80% shade, air and soil temperatures drop 5–10°C and humidity rises 15–20% — transpiration falls to a rate the root system can actually sustain.

The result is not just survival. Shaded seedlings build more chlorophyll, thicker stems and better root mass, which is what determines performance after transplant.

Choosing the Shade Percentage

The single most consequential number in the nursery. Here is what each level actually does to a coffee seedling.

Why 75–80% and not 90%

More shade is not safer. Past roughly 80% the seedling receives too little light to build stem thickness, and you get tall, soft, etiolated stock that fails at transplant.

The target is a stable microclimate — not darkness. Measure the delivered rate rather than trusting the label: knitted shade cloth varies with tension and installation angle.

Pro Tip: rate is a stage setting, not a site setting

Two nurseries at the same altitude can need different schedules because one transplants at 4 months and the other at 6. Set the rate against growth stage first, then adjust for altitude and season.

Shade House Structure

Height and fixing method decide ventilation and net life. A correct percentage on a bad structure still produces a bad nursery.

Ventilation is part of the shade decision

A low, tight structure traps warm humid air under the net — the exact conditions that invite damping-off and fungal pressure in a seedling bed.

Give the structure enough headroom for air to move, and fix the cloth so it stays tensioned: reinforced edges and grommets at the fixing points are what stop a net tearing out in the first storm.

Watering Changes Under Shade

Shade cuts evaporation sharply. Carrying an open-sun watering schedule under 75% net is one of the most common ways to lose a nursery batch.

The trap: same schedule, wetter medium

Under shade the medium stays wet far longer. Unchanged irrigation frequency leads to waterlogging, oxygen-starved roots and damping-off — problems that look like disease but start as a scheduling error.

07 · Hardening

The Hardening Schedule

The step most nurseries rush. Seedlings raised under 75–80% shade cannot go straight to field conditions — they need a staged reduction over 2–3 weeks.

What hardening actually is

Hardening is the controlled removal of shade before transplant. Each step raises light and mild water stress on purpose, so the seedling thickens its stem, builds cuticle and closes stomata faster — the traits that decide whether it survives the first week in the field.

What shade percentage do coffee seedlings need?
75–80% during the seedling stage, roughly the first five months. This holds air and soil temperature 5–10°C below open sun and raises humidity 15–20%, which is what a shallow nursery root system can sustain.
Can coffee grow without shade?
Mature coffee can be grown in full sun under intensive management, but seedlings cannot. In the nursery stage leaf-surface temperature regularly exceeds 35°C in open sun, closing stomata and stalling growth.
Is more shade always safer?
No. Beyond about 80% the seedling gets too little light to build stem thickness, producing tall soft etiolated stock that stalls after transplant. The goal is a stable microclimate, not darkness.
How often should I water under shade?
Less often than in open sun. Shade sharply reduces evaporation, so an unchanged schedule waterlogs the medium and invites damping-off. Adjust frequency to how the medium actually dries, not to a fixed calendar.
When and how should I reduce shade?
Over 2–3 weeks before transplant: 75–80% first drops to 40–50%, then to full sunlight. This staged hardening toughens stem tissue and cuticle so field conditions are not a shock.
White or black shade cloth?
White and reflective cloth scatters light and runs cooler underneath, which matters most in high-altitude nurseries where heat is the limiting factor. Black is a cost-effective default where heat load is moderate.
