Netting Systems & Installation Architectures
Systems change everything: tension points, mechanization, maintenance workload and net life. This is where most of the cost difference lives.
The structure decides the net, not the other way round
A drape is thrown over the row and secured at the bottom — cheapest to start, highest annual labour, and it won't stop ground-level hail in high wind.
A pitched roof gives one panel each side, shedding hail off the row with moderate structure cost. It's the structured all-rounder.
An overhead canopy is a tensioned flat roof on cables and poles — the most expensive and the most effective, with zero machinery restriction.

Material Science & UV Durability
HDPE performance depends on UV stabilization, weave behaviour, and how the net is tensioned and stored. Two nets with the same gram weight can differ by 5 years of service life.
Same gram weight, half the life
HALS (hindered amine light stabilizer) protects polymer chains from UV-driven degradation — it is not the same thing as a UV absorber or carbon black, and the three age very differently.
Exposure is regional: the same net that lasts 10 years in central Europe (~70 KLY) can age twice as fast in Nelson, NZ (~160 KLY). A warranty quoted without a KLY assumption is not a warranty.
Weave choice drives tension distribution and tear propagation. Knitted mesh forgives sloppy tensioning but a cut can run; woven and locked structures contain the tear where it started.

Technical Insight — how to test a supplier
A warranty is only meaningful when it matches UV intensity + tension method. If a supplier can't tell you the HALS grade, the weave logic, and the KLY exposure the warranty assumes, the number on the quote is marketing, not engineering.

How Netting Changes Your Orchard's Microclimate
Netting doesn't just block hail — it changes light, temperature, humidity and UV under the canopy. Get this right and you gain sunburn protection and water savings; get it wrong and you lose fruit colour or invite fungal pressure.
You are managing a new climate, not just a roof
Light: darker, denser nets cut more PAR — black net can reduce light by up to ~33% versus an open block, which dulls red colour development on apples.
Heat: shade keeps fruit-surface temperature below the 46–52 °C sunburn threshold. In trials netted fruit stayed 88–97% sunburn-free versus 52–71% in the open.
Pollination: a closed canopy changes bee behaviour during bloom — hive placement and timing need to change with it.

Black
Strongest shading and sunburn protection. Best for hot, high-radiation blocks — but the biggest PAR penalty, so expect a colour trade-off on red varieties.
White / Pearl
Scatters light into the canopy with a moderate shade rate. The balanced default when you want sunburn relief without giving up too much light.
Transparent
Maximum light transmission — the choice for colour-critical fruit and cooler regions where sunburn is not the limiting factor.
Field Note (practical)
In humid regions, "denser is safer" is the wrong instinct. A tighter canopy that traps humidity can cost you more in fungicide than the hail it prevents. Pair every mesh decision with a ventilation check — and in colour-critical blocks, check the shade rate against your target red colour before ordering, not after harvest.

Hail netting is loss-avoidance, not a yield boost. You're not buying more fruit — you're buying certainty that the fruit you grew survives to harvest. On high-value varieties the math is decisive.
Buy it for the storm you can't predict
In mild years, crop insurance can beat netting on gross margin (Spanish study, black net). Netting's real value shows in extreme years — Brazil 2010/2011: open blocks wiped out, netted blocks intact.
Material runs $0.50–2.50/m². A 10 ha orchard at mid-range is $80,000–150,000 installed. Drape is cheapest upfront; permanent overhead costs more but eliminates annual install/removal labour.
