Deployment, tension, seasonal timing, cleaning and storage — the routines that decide whether a net serves three seasons or ten. One checklist per system.
Hail Netting
Leno · Drape · Canopy- Deploy on time. Close the canopy before your regional hail season opens — not after the first storm warning.
- Re-check tension. After the first storm and at season start — a sagging panel collects hail instead of shedding it.
- Open after harvest. Folding the net back for winter reduces snow load and UV exposure it doesn’t need to take.
- Inspect edges & clips. Damage starts at fixing points, not mid-panel — walk the rows, check plates and clips.
- Store dry and shaded. Off-season, keep folded nets off bare soil, away from chemicals and rodents.
- Common mistake: leaving the canopy closed all winter — it shortens net life and loads the structure for nothing.
Shade Cloth
Greenhouse · Field · Reflective- Match cover to season. The right shade percentage in spring can be the wrong one in mid-summer — plan the switch, don’t react to it.
- Keep it taut, not stretched. Flapping cloth abrades itself against wires and frames — most wear is self-inflicted.
- Watch the contact points. Pad sharp frame edges — a clean cloth on a rough frame still fails early.
- Rinse, don’t scrub. Dust and algae cut light transmission — a low-pressure rinse restores it without damaging the knit.
- Store rolled, not crushed. Fold lines become weak lines — roll the cloth on a core for the off-season.
- Common mistake: waiting until mid-season to replace a tired cloth — the crop pays for it twice.
Bird & Vineyard Nets
Side · Drape · Canopy- Net at veraison, not before. Cover when the fruit starts to colour — too early shades the crop for no protection gain.
- Close the gaps. Birds enter at the bottom edge and row ends — a well-hung net with an open skirt protects nothing.
- Remove for harvest gently. Dragging nets over posts and wire tears more mesh than a whole season of weather.
- Shake out, then dry. Leaves and fruit left in a stored net invite mould and rodents — clean before it goes in the shed.
- Store out of the sun. UV works on a bundled net too — the shed, not the headland, between seasons.
- Common mistake: judging net life by looks alone — UV fatigue shows in tension behaviour before it shows in colour.
