Agriculture Crop Covers

After discovering the value of agricultural knowledge—whether from your own experience or through our Academy—you quickly realize how much easier farming becomes when information is clear, practical, and grounded in real science.
This inspires you to learn deeper, improve your farm decisions, or train your team with reliable guidance.

But soon, a new set of questions naturally appears:

  • Where should I start learning? Which topics matter most to my crops?

  • What techniques or methods are proven to work in real fields?

  • Are there step-by-step guides that help me solve specific farming challenges?

  • If I need expert advice, who can I talk to—and where can I get it?

After years of building hail nets for orchards in Italy, Chile, and New Zealand, here’s the mistake I see most often: buyers ask me for “the strongest net,” when the real question is which net matches their support system and their actual risk.

A grower with no posts and a tight budget doesn’t need a heavy Leno canopy net — he needs a drape net he can throw over the row in a season. A flat-canopy orchard in a hail belt shouldn’t cheap out on a 3-year drape. Strength is only one of four trade-offs: strength, multi-purpose use, lifespan, and cost.

Field trials back this up. In a Spanish apple trial, an uncovered control lost 10.6% of fruit to a real hailstorm while the netted blocks lost zero — but push shading too far and you can trade color and even yield for protection.

This guide walks through the three net types, how to match one to apple, citrus, cherry, or grape, the three installation methods, and how to size a quote.

The worry I hear from apple growers before they net is always the same: “Will it dull my colour?” It’s a fair fear — colour sets the grade, and the grade sets the price, and a net does cut the light that builds red.

After years of supplying apple orchards, I tell them colour is a problem you manage, not one you accept. Once you’ve picked a light-passing net colour, the real work is putting light back: lay reflective mulch under the net (research shows 1.6–3.9× more reflected light and about 9% more well-coloured Class I fruit), and on colour-critical reds, use a net you can open for the final weeks. On green varieties, it’s a non-issue.

You don’t choose between hail protection and colour. You manage the light.
