UV Stabilization Hub: What Actually Decides How Long a Net Lasts
A warranty in years means nothing without the KLY it assumes. This hub covers stabiliser chemistry, regional UV load, GSM, and how to test a supplier's claim before you order.
A Net Does Not Wear Out. It Photo-Degrades.
HDPE has no natural UV resistance. Left unprotected, sunlight breaks the polymer chains directly — the net gets brittle, loses tensile strength, then tears at the fixing points under ordinary wind load.
Protection is built in at the pellet, not sprayed on
UV protection enters the net as a masterbatch — stabiliser concentrate compounded into the resin before extrusion. It is inside the yarn, which is why you cannot inspect it, and why the certificate matters more than the look of the cloth.
Two nets can be identical in colour, weave and gram weight, and differ by five years of service life based on what went into the pellet.

Buyers usually ask one question — how many years. These are the four that actually determine the answer.

All three slow photo-degradation. They do it by different mechanisms, and that decides which one suits your product and climate.
HALS
Interrupts the degradation chain reaction and regenerates itself, which is why it holds up over long exposure. The standard for long-life agricultural netting.
UV Absorbers
Converts UV energy into harmless heat, but is consumed in the process. Effective early, weaker late in the life cycle.
Carbon Black
Blocks UV physically and is cheap and durable — but it forces the net black, which is a shade and colour decision, not just a UV one.
Pro Tip: ask which one, not whether
Almost every supplier will say the net is UV stabilised. The question that separates them is which chemistry, at what loading, and for how many KLY. A supplier who cannot answer has not specified it — they bought whatever the compounder had.
The Same Net Does Not Last the Same Everywhere
KLY (kilolangley) is annual accumulated solar radiation. It is the number that turns a lab rating into a field expectation.

Why "10-year warranty" travels badly
A ten-year warranty written for central European exposure is, in Australia, closer to a five-year net. Same product, same certificate — the difference is 180 KLY versus 120. Always ask what exposure the warranty assumes.
More Stabiliser Cannot Save a Thin Net
The most common sourcing mistake: comparing UV grades between two nets that are not comparable in the first place.
The two-number rule
Settle GSM and resin first. Compare UV grade second. A thin net has less polymer mass per square metre, so the same percentage of stabiliser protects a structure that had less to give.
Ask for grams per square metre on every quote, and put it in the same table as the price. Two quotes that look 20% apart on price are often 30% apart on GSM — that is the real comparison.
Recycled resin is the same trap in a different form: no UV package reliably fixes a feedstock whose polymer chains are already degraded.

Accelerated weathering is a legitimate tool. It becomes marketing the moment an hour count is presented as a guaranteed lifespan.
Read it as a ranking, not a lifespan
A fair claim: "B outlasted A by 30% under identical cycles." Not a fair claim: "B lasts 8 years." Accelerated chambers compress exposure but cannot reproduce the full combination of heat, humidity, dust, tension and handling that a net meets in the field.
Kevin has had a tender cross his desk where a competitor wrote 5,000 hours QUV = 8-year guarantee straight into the spec. There is no conversion factor that makes that statement true.

You cannot inspect UV protection by looking at the cloth. You verify it by asking questions a real manufacturer can answer immediately.
Why these four, in this order
Each question narrows what the previous one left open: chemistry tells you the mechanism, KLY anchors it to your location, GSM and resin set what is being protected, and the evidence type tells you whether the first three were measured or asserted. A supplier who answers all four has specified the product. One who answers none has bought whatever the compounder had.
HALS, absorber or carbon black — and the percentage. Vague answers mean it was not specified.
Without this number the year figure is unanchored and untestable.
Ask for the resin certificate and the percentage of regrind. A virgin-resin producer answers zero without hesitating.
Both are useful. Presenting the first as the second is the red flag.
